There is food for pleasure then there is food for
sustenance, but have you heard of foods that reduce pain?
While your taste buds always crave for that
amazing sensation there is more to food than just taste. Many researches have
proved that food can be used to combat pain at different levels. Let us talk
about ten such foods.
Ten Foods That Combat Pain
Cherries: A recent study says that tart
cherry extract is ten times more effective in relieving pain than aspirin.
While this is true for sour cherries, sweet cherries are also considered
beneficial.
Ginger: Ginger isn’t just for sore throat and
upset stomach; it contains rich inflammation-fighting compounds which soothe
sore muscles. The recommended dosage of ginger is 500 to 1,000 milligrams a
day.
Turmeric: While talking about home-remedies,
there is no way we can forget turmeric. Turmeric is a more effective
anti-inflammatory than steroids. This is mainly because of curcumin in turmeric
which suppresses pain with similar mechanism as some of the painkillers.
Salmon: Salmon is really good for inflammatory
joints and troubled stomach. The Omega-3 fatty acids present in salmon help
reduce pains in general and specifically the pain due to rheumatoid arthritis.
Coffee: Studies have shown that around 200
milligrams of caffeine can provide relief from headaches. It can also help with
migraine. It should be kept in mind that dependency on caffeine can do more
harm than good.
Walnuts: Don’t be surprised to find walnuts on
our list. The high amount of Omega-3 in walnuts does the same thing as salmon.
So if you don’t eat salmon, here is your alternative.
Flax seeds: Flax seeds have a lot of fatty acids
which help in pain relief. Cooking in flax seed oil on the other hand is not
advisable as it has opposite effect and can cause irritation and pain.
Celery: Celery as well as celery seeds has more
than twenty anti-inflammatory compounds. Apigenin present in celery is
very powerful in its anti-inflammatory action. Celery can be used in stews and
soups.
The berry family: Blackberries, raspberries,
blueberries and strawberries contain anti-pain compound. These berries taste
fabulous and are as effective as cherries in pain relief.
Sage: It is good for sore throat. If your throat
feels scratchy or irritable, sipping tea made of brewed sage leaves helps.
